Facts
Some facts and figures around Access Recycling’s new rail operation from Canberra to Sydney:
- This will be the first freight train to enter or depart from the ACT in 32 years. It is the first freight train to depart loaded from the ACT ever – goods have never been railed out of the ACT.
- One freight train will haul 50 shipping containers with a net cargo of 1,200 tonnes of clean scrap metal ready for export.
- This is the equivalent of 40 b.double truck loads. Until now, Access Recycling would use 5 b.double trucks making daily deliveries to Sydney of unprocessed scrap metal. The train service takes these trucks off the road.
- The Kingston Rail Terminal is approximately 5 kilometres from the Access Recycling site located at 15 Lithgow Street, Fyshwick.
Access Recycling’s investment of $3million will go towards the following items:
- A 720 tonne Vezzani inclined shear which is capable of shearing 30 tonnes per hour of scrap metal
- A magnetic drum ferrous metal separation system
- A container tilter (rotates containers onto their end for loading with loose metal
- Two container handling forklifts
- Two high-reach material handlers
- A road truck and container carrying trailer (to move containers from Kingston to Fyshwick)
- ACT Government endorsement was given following a demonstration and trial container movement day. On October 27, representatives from various departments of the ACT Government were invited to the demonstration at the Kingston rail terminal. A container handling forklift was used to lift containers on and off a train and road truck. A sound and traffic study was undertaken by independent assessors. Their reports were submitted to the ACT Government for review.
